Canada's government has endorsed a plan to move the remaining captive whales from the shuttered Marineland park in Ontario to aquariums in the United States and Spain. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has issued permits for the whales under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This is a significant step forward, according to Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson, who emphasizes the ongoing work required to ensure a safe and timely transfer.
The relocation is an incredibly complex process, as Marineland has 30 belugas and four dolphins to move. The park's founder, John Holer, passed away in 2018, and his wife, Marie Holer, took over operations before putting the park up for sale in 2023. Since then, the estate has been working to dismantle the park, which includes roller coasters and other rides.
The whales are set to be moved to five marine parks: Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, SeaWorld locations in San Antonio and San Diego, and Oceanografic Valencia. Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut will also assist in the relocation. The Canadian government has not yet decided whether it will provide taxpayer dollars to support the move.
